Meet Curtis Whaley, Strength & Conditioning Coach and Personal Trainer

Please introduce yourself — who you are, your background, what service you provide?
My name is Curtis Whaley, and I've spent the last 20 years training college, high school, and tactical athletes. I specialize in speed and strength development for middle and high school athletes, and one-on-one personal training for adults looking to get in shape or lose weight. I hold CSCS, USAW, and PN1 certifications and offer both virtual and in-person training.
How did you get started? What led you to this industry? Was it always the plan?
I've always wanted to coach — even in high school, my dream was to earn my degree and coach high school football and baseball. Once I finished my undergraduate degree I began coaching, and my college strength coach asked if I'd be interested in pursuing strength coaching at the college level. That question changed everything and led to a 20-year career in the field. My love for strength training really began in college after suffering a few injuries and spending a lot of time in the athletic training room and weight room. I remember thinking about the impact those coaches had on me — and knowing I wanted to make that same kind of impact on others.
What do you love most about the work? What keeps you motivated and inspired day to day?
Serving others is my passion — watching people figure it out, seeing that light bulb come on, watching others excel in life. That's what excites me. I don't believe in motivation; I believe in building sustainable habits through discipline. Every day I wake up with a burning desire to help others and set a good example of how to live life for my son.
What's something people don't see or know about your industry?
People don't see the countless thankless hours that go into building a program that will ensure a client's success. The reality is, getting in shape or continuing to develop as an athlete takes sacrifice and the willingness to live an uncommon life. Those who commit to that — who do the uncommon things consistently and extraordinarily well — tend to have the most success. What I love most about this work is that it doesn't care who you are, where you're from, or the color of your skin. It rewards those who put in the effort. The work doesn't lie.
What resources, tools, or support do you wish existed?
I think our industry has plenty of tools, support, and resources. What I wish we could eliminate is the nonsense on social media that gives people false hope— fad workouts and crash diets that set people up to fail and discourage them from trying again. That's why I appreciate what Maisaic is doing to put qualified coaches and trainers in front of the people who need them.
What do you want potential clients to know about you or your work?
I've trained numerous MLB and NFL draft picks, along with many athletes who've gone on to earn All-Conference and All-American honors at the college level. I've also helped many adults lose weight and feel better about themselves. I am passionate, and I will give you every resource you need to accomplish your goals — as long as you're willing to put in the effort.
